I’m a Coach because..

Fast times are fun and all...but they aren't everything.

Today, one of my swimmers, a young high schooler who has had a bumpy-if-not-horrid fight back from injury, competed in the 200 fly.

She performed well - better then she has in the past two years - but that wasn't it...

Swim meets and races are neither good or bad, despite what we want to think, they just are. Fast, slow, whatever. A race doesn't always have to mean something, but after years of poor performance, this race meant something to her.

And it wasn't because this was a best time...

.....it was the look in her eyes, a glimpse of happy tears, a timid smile and the statement "that wasn't bad" that demonstrated a new-found belief in herself...as an athlete and as a person. She didn't laugh-off or reject my praise or critical insight. She listened with an open mind-- for the first time in a long time.

I coach for moments like these. 🙂

Keep on Swimming,

Coach Meg
